Mission Statement:
‘To inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise’.
Vision Statement:
‘That all young people will have the opportunity to gain personal experience of how business works, understand the role it plays in providing employment and creating prosperity, and be inspired to improve their own prospects and the competitiveness of the UK’.
Young Enterprise offers a wide range of experiences and shows pupils what its like to own and run their own company. Throughout the year pupils attend trade fairs, master classes and open days to help further their business knowledge.
In our school, Young Enterprise is an extra curricular activity offered to Year 13 students (this year’s company is called Infinity) with the aim of setting up and running a small business to make a profit and to have fun.
Students are expected to raise their own capital, source their own products, keep their own accounts and look after all other parts of the business with help from their teachers.
Carrickfergus Grammar school’s Young Enterprise team of Andrew Fulton, Ashleigh Averell, Francesca Majury, Kerry McIlroy, Alex Burnside, Phil Adams, Marcus Mullan, Ryan Stockard with link teachers Mark Irwin and Keith Marshall recently attended Fairhill’s trade fair in Ballymena where they cleaned up! The Grammar school’s product, Magmutt, is a magnetic mat that when placed under the dog’s bed helps regulate blood flow, increasing oxygenation and relives arthritic pains and joint stiffness whilst decreasing the healing time of minor injuries. At the trade fair team “Infinity” picked up 3 awards, a new school record. They won the top award for ‘Best Product’ as well as and ‘Most Innovative Product’ and ‘Best Environmental Awareness’. The team did extremely well and had a massive confidence boost. Link teacher Keith Marshall said
“This was a fantastic day for the company. All the pupils have worked so hard and these awards are a wonderful recognition of their tremendous efforts. We had hoped to win one award but to win three is almost unheard of. We are especially grateful to our business advisor, John Stewart of Robinson’s Shoes in Carrickfergus, for all the help and advice he has given us this year. ”
Infinity hope to be attending future trade fairs and aim to build on this success. If you are interested in purchasing a Magmutt (small £8.95 and large £11.95) contact us via our website www.infinitycgs.webs.com or e-mail us to

With a now healthy sales portfolio Infinity bought out the share holders, returning a 5% profit on their investment in six months, and downsized the management team to
• Ashleigh Averell
• Alex Burnside
• Francesca Majury
• Kerry McIlroy
• Marcus Mullan
The ‘Fantastic Five’ then entered Young Enterprise’s Company Competition and after a company report and presentation they won their regional final (North East Area). This was announced at a great day out in the Millennium Forum in Londonderry. This meant that they were one of the 6 regional winners and represented the North East Area at the next stage. Following another round of a company report and presentation before attending the regional winners’ event in Belfast City Hall where Wallace High were the winners. With a few more additional sales Infinity would certainly have gone very close to becoming Northern Ireland winners. Overall, however, they can look back on a very successful year as the team members have learned what it is like to work in business and have gained valuable skills of communication, teamwork and for the future.
