The CGS Bridge Club as ever had another very successful season in 2009/2010.

We have won numerous trophies and cups at Ulster schools level over the past few years and this continued this year with our junior team winning the Ulster schools pairs competition and coming second in the Ulster schools teams. Our senior team played well enough to qualify and represent Ulster in the annual interprovincial tournament where they finished joint 3rd out of 10 teams.

This year was our third trip to Irish schools competition in Galway which has now become an annual trip for the bridge club bringing 11 players this year ably assisted by Mr Martin and Mr Reid, to compete against Irish schools elite players.

The 3 teams consisted of: 1. Gavin Irvine (3 times Ulster schools champion), Andrew Cathcart, Phil Martin and Phil Adams, 2. Chris McNab, Matt Carson, Jack Cahoon and John Fittis, and team 3 travelling down for the first time were Aaron Wilson, Scott Murdock and Craig Smylie – out of the 30 or so teams competing we finished 6th,11th and 12th and hope to improve again on that next year

Ulster Bridge Tournament (NOV 2010)
This year, Carrickfergus Grammar School sent three pairs of students to compete in the Ulster School’s Pairs Bridge Championships. They comprised of one novice team and two senior teams. The novice team (Andrew Wilson and Craig) came a very credible fifth out of eight in the novice section of the tournament. Considering this was the first tournament experience for Andrew, this was a great result. The senior teams consisted of two pairs, pair 1 (Gavin Irvine and Philip Adams) and pair 2 (Philip Martin and Andrew Cathcart). Pair 1 went on to win the tournament by 23 match points from second place and secure the first victory for C.G.S. in the senior section of this competition. Pair 2 also had a good result by coming eighth out of fourteen pairs. Both pairs finished strongly and will compete as a team later in the year.

Bridge Club runs at lunchtimes for different age groups in Mr Reid’s room and is always on the look out for new members; especially those in years 8, 9 and 10. So listen out in assembly for what day it’s on and come along and learn how to play…… and maybe even get a trip to Galway out of it too!!
