Aim of the Award
Since we began in 1956, our aim has been to help young people to plan and undertake their own programme of activities to develop mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
The award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for young people from age 14 to 25.
In Carrickfergus Grammar School we offer the Silver and Gold levels of The Award.
Participants will plan and undertake their own programme of activities for various lengths of time (at least 3 months) and in various sections.

What happened in 2009 - 10
During the year 2009-10 we had 50 pupils from year 11 taking on the challenge of the Silver Award. Over the year they have been participating in volunteering, skills and physical recreation activities. They all completed the theory training for their expedition and their practice expedition in the Mourne Mountains in May. During September 10 they will complete their qualifying expedition and throughout the year they will complete the other sections aiming to be finished the award by June 2011.
38 Pupils from year 12 continued to work on the various sections of their award and successfully planned and completed their silver expedition. These students will hope to complete the Silver Award by October 11.
During the year (2009-10) 23 pupils completed all sections of their Silver award and were presented their Award badge by Mr. K. Mulvenna at a school assembly. These students have been invited to attend a Silver Presentation in the Whitla Hall, Queens University on Saturday 11th September. This ceremony recognises the many months of hard work each student has completed.

In September 2009 14 pupils decided to continue on to Gold Award level. During the year they started work on the Volunteering, Skills and Physical sections of their award.
In June they completed a very demanding Gold expedition in the Lake District.
They continue to work on the other sections of the Award and hope to complete it in the next year.
We also want to congratulate 3 past pupils on completing their Gold Award, Hannah Addley, Gary Armstrong and Lucy Batten.
